BYOB – Organising Appropriate Gatherings in the Lymph Node

CRUK Beatson Institute

The immune system faces an information transfer problem in appropriately directing T-cell responses in the lymph node; a site distal to immune challenges. Contextual information relevant to antigens must be encoded and transmitted to T-cells to allow diverse responses to occur within the same lymph node ensuring both robust immune response generation alongside maintenance of tolerance. The complexity of this problem becomes particularly apparent when the diversity of the cell types involved in directing T-cell responses are considered with many residing within the lymph node and never directly encountering antigens within their tissue context. Using models of both infection and cancer development we have investigated how tissues communicate with the lymph node to solve this conundrum.
